The benefits of health care reform in each Colorado congressional district

The House committee on Energy and Commerce last week issued an analysis showing the benefits of health care reform in all 435 congressional districts. On the next page, a table offers key points of that analysis for Colorado’s seven congressional districts, including the estimated number of people affected by the main provisions.

One of the biggest benefits is eliminating the “donut hole” in Medicare drug coverage. Under previous policy, Medicare covered only a certain amount, and then there was a big gap where patients had to pay all the cost, and then Medicare came and paid the remainder. The policy created a big problem for seniors, leaving many thousands of them without complete prescription drug coverage.

Other elements of reform provide for tax credits, improved coverage and new insurance for people who currently have no coverage. In all, the benefits will touch huge numbers of Coloradans in every part of the state.
